A man called Dana Hanna, who is employed like architects’ chief at an Internet place on pets, has hung on Internet a video in which it is appreciated clearly as it interrupts his wedding along with his fiancée this way to update the sentimental situation both in Facebook and in Twitter.

Apparently it is the first time that a similar fact happens, here if there is applied this saying that he says “do not leave for tomorrow what you can already do!!”

Many people have a problem with the fact that Facebook is so completely ingrained into our collective conscience. What was once a cool place to share photos with friends and family at University has now become a place for families to unite and for parents to keep an eye on their college-loving offspring. It has come a long way from the campus-based information and communication site that was its founder’s initial plan.

Over the last five years, it has not just been Facebook’s rise which has been so famous, but the fall of other social networks which once competed with the big blue and white monster. Myspace, once the crowned king of the internet (with the most popular website of them all, and traffic and advertising figures to match) has now become an afterthought, a joke made by ‘cool people’ who talk about what is now completely ‘out’. Their fall was due to a mixture of factors, one of which was the Facebook took the social network experience and made it ‘clean’ and thoughtful.

How did it do this? It removed the trash graphics, the email forwards, the glitzy text and served the public what they really wanted – information and communication. This first came in the form of ’status updates’ and wall posting. What is a status update? It’s something which Facebook users use to give information about what they are doing at any specific moment. Some also use them to share web addresses or funny websites which they think their friends might be interested in. This function on Facebook was completely new – it changed the face of messaging from ‘push’ (like email) to ‘mini blog’ (like now, Twitter).

Wall posting was similar – it was like walking over to someone’s own bulletin board and leaving a note for them. People would read other messages on their friends boards (also known as Facebook stalking) and then connect with new people. It was a cyber revolution. There was, however, always something missing – the live chat feature which some people thought would never be able to be integrated into a social network.

That’s when Facebook chat was introduced. It had always been the intention of the biggest social network in the world to constantly keep innovating and evolving, to stay ahead of the curve. When they introduced their chat function many people thought that they had made a mistake – the beta process was a little slow and had errors – the javascript sometimes made the pages disappear or act strangely, but after ironing out all of these issues, it turned out that they had struck gold. Facebook chat was one of the most popular clients on the internet, and its fans were wild for its clean cut style and cool colours.

One thing seemed to be missing however – Facebook chat emoticons! Where were the colouful smileys and symbols that were in nearly every other chat client available on the web? Text emotions were ok to use for some people, but generally speaking it was unheard of for an organization to create software like Facebook chat and not include Facebook chat emoticons listed for people to find. After hours of testing, users managed to find a full list of the icons available for use in the chat program, and many were surprised by the different types and styles.

This does not mean that all the sexual delinquents of New York have already been eliminated, but if it is an encouraging number that at least reflects work and sure effort to the users of each of these networks.

According to recent numbers, Facebook has closed more than 3.410 accounts to delinquents, while his rival MySpace reaches 1.975 blocked accounts.

One of the interesting things to come out of his just concluded townhall meeting in Shanghai was US President Barack Obama’s admission: “I have never used Twitter”.

Obama casually divulged this while answering a question about the Great Firewall of China in this historic town meeting between the US president and Chinese students, which was livestreamed by the White House, with a discussion on Facebook via Facebook Connect.

The US president’s official @BarackObama account is one of the most popular on Twitter, with over 2.6 million followers. People have, of course, assumed that a staff member must be doing the posting, but still it’s somewhat surprising that Obama, who has been savvy in using New Media for his campaign and presidency, has not even tried using this social-networking tool.

Obama explained that his thumbs are “too clumsy”, while stressing his firm belief in advocating the use of technology and not restricting Internet access–a pronouncement aimed at the Great Firewall of China, which refers to the Chinese Government’s censorship and filtering of Internet sites.

In fact, Facebook is one of the Web sites blocked in China, making it ironic that the White House live video stream was making use of Facebook Connect. Or perhaps that was part of the plan? Were Chinese Netizens even able to watch the live video stream–was it being streamed by Chinese media, or were they able to use proxies?

Earlier in his speech, Obama noted that China is now the world’s biggest Internet user, which is why they were “pleased to include the Internet in today’s event”. He told the audience that the townhall meeting is a cherished tradition in the US, and thanked the Chinese students for this opportunity to talk to them, and, more importantly, hear their questions.

This is Obama’s first visit to China, and this year marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the US and China. He expressed the desire to meet with China’s youth whom he referred to as “China’s future”.

I don’t know how freely the students were allowed to ask their questions, but at the very least, this livestreamed townhall meeting, with questions posted on the site, was symbolic of the role that technology is playing in creating an interconnected world, one in which powerful nations like the US and China must learn to cooperate and co-exist.

It may sound naive, but Obama expressed the hope that the US youth will be his nation’s best ambassadors to China, and that the Chinese youth will in turn be China’s. He talked of the common aspirations and shared values of the youth, and the need for both nations to understand each other’s culture.

Perhaps, through the youth, through the Web, the US, China and every other nation could learn to accept that we are all interconnected.

Perhaps, through their eyes, we may be able to shed our cynicism and forget the sins of the past, and look excitedly toward the future.
