Hackers and spammers have been using relatively similar tactics over the past few months to compromise Facebook user accounts. The most recent scam spreading on Facebook involves the use of hijacked user accounts for sending out chat messages with links to the standard Facebook phishing page. When the user clicks the link, they are sent to a fake Facebook login page and then redirected to the actual Facebook after their email and password has been stolen.

The system then automatically logs in with the user’s account and spams all their friends via chat. This form of phishing scam utilizes automated robots to perform these tasks on a large level. Facebook is known for aggressively pursuing phishers, scammers, and hackers. However once in a while new security vulnerabilities appear on Facebook. This is the latest one of those.

My guess is that Facebook will have this new security issue resolved relatively quickly as the offending site will be blocked and Facebook will set up a filter to remove the chat message. The chat message that we received stated: “ROFL this you?! http://3.ly/mZQ”. Had I not known that this is a standard scam, I could have easily been duped.

There’s no telling how many users have had their accounts compromised in this latest attack but if you want to protect yourself, make sure not to click on any questionable links sent by your friends via chat.

While Facebook already provides Facebook Page administrators with tools to upload their media content, there are still limitations on how fans can interact with that content. Diditz, a D.C. area company, is looking to expand on the existing features to provide Facebook Pages with a more robust toolset for engaging your fan base. Since originally launching a couple months ago, Diditz has significantly upgraded their product.

The company is now positioned as a “free and secure tool for Facebook pages to easily collect user-generated albums, videos and blogs throughout Facebook and use that content as a tool for marketing, outreach and engagement.” Yes, Facebook already provides tools for embedding photos and videos, and even lets fans submit their own content if the Page administrator allows them to. However Diditz is looking to fill the gap by providing a tool which brings in content about your brand from around the web. The application reminds me of a void which RockYou’s SuperWall successfully filled. While many Pages have more robust branded applications, having an easy way to get users contributing in a branded environment for free is extremely useful.

There are some clear challenges that Diditz will face in terms of gaining significant traction, the most significant hurdle is getting Page administrators to use Diditz instead of Facebook’s existing applications. There are plenty of Page administrators who would like to have a more robust media content platform though, and I have a feeling that many smaller organizations will take advantage of Diditz for that purpose.

Right now Diditz is still an invitation only product, but for those Page administrators looking to try out the product, up to 100 people can register via the application for free with the code “AllFacebook”.

In order to analyze the patterns of search of the users of Facebook a study has gone forward to identify the most popular pages of the social network.

More than 600.000 commercial pages were analyzed in order to find the use patterns. Some of the aspects that have been born in mind in this investigation are the popularity, the quantity of released content, the number of followers and the categories.

After the analysis, the position of “more popular” in Facebook has been clear: the page of Michael Jackson is the most followed of the network with more than 10 million fans. That of actor Vin Diesel follows him, with seven million fans, and that of Obama, with 6,9 millions.

In a discreet one the fourth and fifth position in the ranking of the most followed, finds the Facebook page, with almost six million fans (5,8) and that of the polemic actress Megan Fox, with 5,1 million fans.

In the United States, they were attacked seven red-haired children were attacked, physics or verbally across Internet, in a school of California (west) by other adolescents seemingly inspired on a page of Facebook, indicated the police, which stopped three children.

The page of the popular place of socialization was inviting to celebrate, on November 20, the “national Day: it strikes a red-haired one” (”Kick to Ginger Day”).
The sherif of Lost Hills indicated that it stopped three 13 and 12-year-old males accused in one of the cases of threats across Internet and in others two of blows inside the school.

Four children and three girls were an attacks object because they were red-haired in Wright Middle School.

The incident seems to have been provoked, according to the police, by an episode in the animated television program “South Park“ in which a personage says that the red-haired ones are beings “without soul” and “diabolical“.
On the Facebook page, dozens of children had left messages affirming that they had realized aggressions.

With roughly 350 millions users, Facebook is enhancing its privacy controls and eliminating its regional framework for online communities.

When Facebook launched in early 2004 as an online network for college students to stay connected, the model centered on sharing information with “networks” of school friends. Over time, the network expanded to companies and regions as well.

Almost 50 percent of all Facebook users are members of regional networks, with some regions encompassing entire countries, such as India and China.

“As Facebook has grown, some of these regional networks now have millions of members and we’ve concluded that this is no longer the best way for you to control your privacy,” Zuckerberg said.

“We are adding something that many of you have asked for – the ability to control who sees each individual piece of content you create of upload. In addition, we will also be fulfilling a request made by many of you to make the privacy-settings page simpler by combining some settings,” he said.

“The plan we’ve come up with is to remove regional networks completely and create a simpler model for privacy control where you can set content to be available to only your friends, friends of our friends, or everyone.”

In the letter, Facebook’s users will be asked to review and update their privacy settings. A message on the site will explain the changes and take users to the page where they can update the settings, Zuckerberg said.

So far, more than 22,000 users have posted comments on Zuckerberg’s letter, most of which are positive feed backs.

It has been a great year for making the world more open and connected. Thanks to your help, more than 350 million people around the world are using Facebook to share their lives online.

To make this possible, we have focused on giving you the tools you need to share and control your information. Starting with the very first version of Facebook five years ago, we’ve built tools that help you control what you share with which individuals and groups of people. Our work to improve privacy continues today.

Facebook’s current privacy model revolves around “networks” — communities for your school, your company or your region. This worked well when Facebook was mostly used by students, since it made sense that a student might want to share content with their fellow students.

Over time people also asked us to add networks for companies and regions as well. Today we even have networks for some entire countries, like India and China.

However, as Facebook has grown, some of these regional networks now have millions of members and we’ve concluded that this is no longer the best way for you to control your privacy. Almost 50 percent of all Facebook users are members of regional networks, so this is an important issue for us. If we can build a better system, then more than 100 million people will have even more control of their information.

The plan we’ve come up with is to remove regional networks completely and create a simpler model for privacy control where you can set content to be available to only your friends, friends of your friends, or everyone.

We’re adding something that many of you have asked for — the ability to control who sees each individual piece of content you create or upload. In addition, we’ll also be fulfilling a request made by many of you to make the privacy settings page simpler by combining some settings. If you want to read more about this, we began discussing this plan back in July.

Since this update will remove regional networks and create some new settings, in the next couple of weeks we’ll ask you to review and update your privacy settings. You’ll see a message that will explain the changes and take you to a page where you can update your settings. When you’re finished, we’ll show you a confirmation page so you can make sure you chose the right settings for you. As always, once you’re done you’ll still be able to change your settings whenever you want.

We’ve worked hard to build controls that we think will be better for you, but we also understand that everyone’s needs are different. We’ll suggest settings for you based on your current level of privacy, but the best way for you to find the right settings is to read through all your options and customize them for yourself. I encourage you to do this and consider who you’re sharing with online.

Thanks for being a part of making Facebook what it is today, and for helping to make the world more open and connected.

It was only a matter of time before another company decided to publicly announce the launch of a service which sells Facebook Page fans for next to nothing. That’s exactly what Viralee is doing this evening. We’ve been receiving inquiries from numerous companies which sell fans under the table, but none have been willing to make a public announcement.

The real issue here is that many services may technically violate Facebook terms. Even if they don’t, it’s direct competition to Facebook in one regard which is why this is shaky ground to operate a business on. In the past week alone, Viralee claims that they’ve sold over 1 million fans. That means serious cash is being spent on fans and according to the underground companies we’ve spoken to, brands are flocking to the “pay per fan” model which we’ve written about numerous times.

So how long does it take for Viralee to turnaround fan orders? The company’s founder, Dominic Holland, has provided us with the following numbers:

For 1-100 fans – same day
For 1,000 fans – inside of 5 days
For 10,000 fans – inside of 14 days

And one plan for the corporate guys is 1,000,000 fans which we guarantee within a month

The only other public competitor that we know of currently, USocial, has already received a Cease And Desist letter after reportedly spamming users and gaining unauthorized access to user accounts. Dominic Holland, founder of Viralee, tells us that “We do not take control of any users account at any time. We create a page for the user and market it within and externally to facebook.”

Pricing for fans through Viralee depends on how many you purchase. For 10 fans it’s 50 cents per fans, whereas for 10,000 fans it’s $0.099 cents per fan. It’s unknown whether or not Facebook will try to crack down on pay per fan services as most fans will be untargeted. Facebook in contrast provides homepage engagement ads which can drive a large number of targeted fans. As I wrote yesterday morning, Verizon was able to attract over 100,000 fans in a day from a single homepage advertisement.

While engagement ads are sold on a CPM basis, we’re hearing that the effective cost per fan for homepage engagement ads is anywhere between $5 and $10. Facebook appears to be experiencing growth in brand ad spend though which is why they may allow untargeted marketing services to peacefully coexist. Oh and if you were wondering who Dominic Holland is, he’s the guy that Orabrush acquired the “Kisses” page from in a bidding war with Hershey.
