Washington D.C. has been abuzz about the couple who crashed a Presidential party and proceeded to post photos of themselves on Facebook. Yesterday the secret service confirmed that they had used Facebook after the event to find out that the couple was not permitted to attend. The photos of the Salahis with President Biden tipped off the Secret Service, which has come under fire in recent days.

The event has been a huge promotion for the couple who will be part of the soon to be released “Real Housewives of DC”. The couple is known to be shameless. According to a number of sources, the couple has gone so far as to use the America’s Polo Cup charity event to embezzle money. The event which is promoted as having been “patroned every year by the President of the United States”, has come under fire. According to the Washington Post:

[M]any sponsors listed by America’s Cup for 2010 — including Land Rover, Cartier, the St. Regis Hotel in Washington and the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co. — say they are not sponsors for that event. Many vendors in previous years said in interviews that the Salahis have not paid for their services in the event’s three-year history, expenses totaling about $500,000. Many have filed lawsuits, and the couple has countersued often. And there is no record of any president attending any of the polo cups.

Even further, the event’s beneficiary “reported that it received $18,608 in 2007″, far less than the hundreds of thousands generated by the event. The D.C.-based fraud ridden socialites were still able to bypass the Secret Service and gain entrance to the event. The Secret Service has since come under significant scrutiny, however yesterday President Obama emphasized his ongoing confidence in the organization’s capabilities.

This will most likely all breeze over in the next week and the Secret Service can move on with business as usual. The Salahis can also continue their ongoing pursuit of widespread media coverage, whether it’s good or bad.

Once again, Facebook was one of the fastest growing search terms for the year. The keyword “Facebook” was the second largest keyword globally, coming right behind “Michael Jackson” who was the most popular search this year for obvious reasons.

Last year we wrote that Facebook was the second most popular search term in the U.S. This year the company has truly expanded to become a global phenomenon. At the time of our post last year, Facebook had over 130 million users. Only one year later the company has almost three times that number. As of now there doesn’t appear to be any slowing in the site’s growth. With all competition now in the rear view mirror, Facebook can truly focus their attention on going after Google.

The only question now is whether or not Facebook can continue with their breakneck growth through next year to remain atop the annual Google Zeitgeist.

If you had any question as to those Facebook ad networks that developers can run on their applications, question no longer. Yesterday evening Facebook posted an update with those ad networks which are safe to run and those that aren’t, in turn singling out four ad networks: Gambit, Social Hour, SocialReach, and Tatto Media. We’ve written extensively about most of these networks, however the latest added to the group is Gambit, something we had been hearing for the past couple weeks.

Facebook now has created two wiki pages in the Facebook Developer Wiki: those companies who can help you monetize your application and those who are not permitted to. It’s a statement to ad networks: cross the line and Facebook will shut you down. Whether or not the company can monitor all the advertising running across their platform is one question, however if your company wants to play cat and mouse with the company, you’ll risk getting shut down.

What is the line that’s being drawn? Well, developers will need to follow the the newly revised platform policy. While Google’s policy is simply to “do no evil”, Facebook’s policy for developers is to “be trustworthy” and to “create a great user experience”. In the world of online advertising, I would argue that where the ethical line is drawn isn’t really that ambiguous, however a number of ad networks have continued to push the limits.

That’s why Facebook is now drawing a definitive line for those ad networks. If you continue pushing the limits and Facebook continues to find your ads in violation of the company’s terms, you risk being placed on the “Banned” lists. With an enforcement team which is increasing in size, trying to push deceptive ads through Facebook Platform applications is becoming an increasingly risky business.

Yesterday afternoon, the Wall Street Journal wrote that Facebook had restructured their share structure to give existing shareholders greater voting rights. It’s a step most companies take prior to going public, but when asked about the company’s intentions, Facebook stated that they have “no plans” to go public “at this time”. Despite their supposed lack of plans, chatter is increasing about the company’s desire to have a public offering, resulting in an dramatic increase in price of privately traded shares.

Just last week, Bloomberg reported that the company’s valuation has jumped 42 percent in just over a month. We did a little more digging after the article and found that those prices were from a month prior and that shares were continuing to rise. We promised to hold off on publishing the new share prices though due to ongoing transactions that would be effected.

Needless to say, if you had invested in Google shares a month ago, you would have done just as well as if you had purchased Facebook shares at the same time and you would have greater liquidity. With Facebook’s ongoing growth though, Facebook’s IPO is a highly anticipated event. Many insiders have projected that the company will file for an IPO in 2010, however with a large bank account and a cash-flow positive business, Facebook has no need to file for a public offering at this time.

While there were previous employees who wanted to cash out on their options, most have been given the opportunity to sell a decent number of shares already. For now it is a guessing game as to when Facebook will file to go public, but any signs that point to the eventual public offering will most definitely receive widespread coverage and attention.
